Disclaimer:  Each project is clearly different with its own technical and unique challenges. Some of the ideas expressed here do not necessarily apply to all projects. As with everything, a full and comprehensive assessment should be carried out for any techniques
applied to any individual well or asset. We make no claim to the effectiveness of any of the following – they are provided as food
for thought.

Below are a few tips:

  • Watch the ID’s and OD’s - of everything! Many a screw up has been caused downhole due to inattention to these two
fundamental dimensions for all equipment run in a well. In fact, check the technical specifications for everything you run in a well (especially watch the differential pressure rating if you are doing any treating type operations). Go downhole with your tools.

  • Coal seam gas is a numbers game.  Unfortunately (or fortunately depending on how you look at it!) eastern Australia has some
of the cheapest gas prices in the world. Therefore to make a CSG project economic in this market requires a commitment to
attack all costs both capital and operating. The secret lies in attacking each and every line item in the project budget.

  • If you have decent permeability in your coal, do you even need to stimulate it? Then again it might be worth trials of side port
    jetting subs and under-reamers.

  • Minimise damage to your coal – minimise polymers in your mud system.

  • Beware the clays especially in the tuffs – use clay inhibition in the form of KCl (potassium chloride). Many of the tuffs
encountered amongst the coal seams are high in smectite clays. In the right environment they can cause significant
drilling problems – use KCl (2 to 3% is often sufficient).
